Fr. Doug Smith
In Residence Priest
Fr. Doug is locally sourced and educated. B.A., M.Th., and M.B.A. degrees make him a triple Domer. He has been a member of the Congregation of Holy Cross for more than 40 years.
He has worked at Notre Dame this time since August, 2007, after serving as a chaplain in the U.S. Navy. He left the Sea Services at the rank of commander and 15 years of service on both the blue and green sides in shore and sea billets, three of them as command chaplain. He had the good fortune of attending the Naval War College, 2001-02, earning a master’s degree in National Security and Strategic Studies.
More recently, at Notre Dame, he worked in Campus Ministry and at Innovation Park before being selected to participate in the leadership development “Rotation Program” sponsored by the Executive Vice President. He currently serves the Enrollment Division as Director of Operations and Finance.
In occasional spare moments he operates the Roamin’ Collard Brewery. He has an avocation for farming and so spends his vacation working during harvest season on a farm in central Montana.
While Fr. Doug is a valued member of our community, he serves no conduct, disciplinary, or formal leadership role in the hall other than offering the sacraments, pastoral care, and good conversation for us when he can. We are glad to welcome him to Walsh as our first ever In Residence Priest!
